Following our successful 2010 merger with Symyx, Accelrys is pleased to announce a new, unified corporate strategy and Enterprise R&D Architecture aimed at accelerating innovation and optimizing our customers’ R&D value chain from research through early manufacturing. This is exciting news for organizations that rely on scientific innovation as their key differentiator—
as all of our customers do—and for organizations looking to move products from lab to market more quickly and efficiently. And our new corporate strategy is more than just a promise. The proof is in the latest 6.6 release of Symyx Notebook by Accelrys.
A strategy for innovation
R&D faces numerous challenges today including massive volumes of scientific information locked in disparate databases…manually intensive, repetitive and error-prone experimental procedures…and disconnected processes that impact compliance, traceability and IP protection. Organizations are also challenged by complex outsourcing, regulatory and sustainability issues. As Dr. Alan S. Louie, research director with IDC Health Insights has said: “The ability to effectively collect, analyze and share scientific data within an organization remains a differentiator that separates industry leaders from wannabes. In the race for R&D agility, the combined solution set created by the merger of Accelrys and Symyx is aligned with the critical need to help scientific organizations achieve this differentiation and reach their innovation goals.”
A focus on science
The new Accelrys Enterprise R&D Architecture draws on Accelrys’ deep domain expertise in chemistry, biology and materials science; it combines the product portfolios of Accelrys and Symyx; and it leverages the Pipeline Pilot™ platform. The architecture offers customers a broad solution set of configurable applications for handling the diversity of science, experimental processes and information requirements encountered across the R&D value chain. The four pillars of the Enterprise R&D Architecture are:
- Modeling and Simulation – Providing better outcomes and reduced costs through the automation and expert use of predictive science
- Enterprise Lab Management – Enhancing lab productivity and cross-lab collaboration with scalability from lab to enterprise
- Workflow Definition and Capture – Optimizing scientific workflows, both experimental and operational processes
- Data Management and Informatics – Improving the understanding and management of complex scientific data types for scientists and engineers
Quickly load, process and analyze biological screening data in the ELN using Pipeline Pilot plate collection protocols. Generate plate maps, import and visualize data for individual samples and compare dose-response curves across samples with only a few mouse clicks.
Symyx Notebook by Accelrys v6.6:
Integrating Pipeline Pilot, Isentris and Formulations!
Building on the exciting possibilities created by the merger of Accelrys and Symyx AND our new Enterprise R&D Architecture, Symyx Notebook by Accelrys v6.6 offers out-of-the-box integration with Accelrys’ Pipeline Pilot™ platform and improved connectivity with Accelrys Isentris® decision support software. The latest notebook release also provides new, productivity-enhancing capabilities for rapidly and efficiently moving chemical and biological formulations to scale-up production.

Boosting the notebook with Pipeline Pilot
Pipeline Pilot boosts the Accelrys ELN with over 3,500 validated chemistry and biology components that can be used to deliver design of experiments, statistics, image analytics, analytical data processing, next generation sequencing, modeling and simulation, data visualization, reporting and other key capabilities to the scientist’s desktop. In addition, Pipeline Pilot’s flexible development environment lets application developers deliver these capabilities quickly and cost-effectively to scientists using the Accelrys ELN.
Connecting related information
A new, built-in data source connection makes it easier for scientists to connect Accelrys ELN experiment repositories with Isentris decision support software. This lets scientists combine results from notebook experiments with other sources of information, gaining access to information that leads to fewer repeated experiments, less re-invention, improved insight into experiment design and better decisions.
New support for chemical and biological formulations
The multidisciplinary Accelrys ELN streamlines and accelerates technology transfer, quality compliance and reporting for analytical, process—and now formulation scientists. New formulation capabilities shorten lab-to-consumer timelines by accelerating the development, optimization and scale-up of chemical and biological formulations. We’ve worked collaboratively with several customers to build specific capabilities for Formulations—while also providing critical integration with our core chemistry platform (e.g., Accelrys Draw & Accelrys Direct data cartridge).
The NEW NGS Collection for Pipeline Pilot
Recently launched at the Molecular Medicine Tri-Conference, the NGS Collection for Pipeline Pilot accommodates your evolving analysis needs with unparalleled power and flexibility, enabling you to adapt quickly and easily to the novel applications and computational methods that are emerging so rapidly in next generation sequencing (NGS).
Register for the NGS Collection overview webinar
Built for use with the Pipeline Pilot enterprise R&D platform, the NGS Collection supports native data formats from all major sequencing platforms, and comes with a comprehensive assortment of NGS data analysis pipelines that are ready to analyze your data.
Using NGS components and provided protocols, you can easily perform common workflows such as:
- Comprehensive quality assessment and filtering
- De novo sequencing
- Mapping to a reference genome or reference sequences
- SNP, indel, CNV detection and profiling
- Analysis of RNA-Seq and ChIP-Seq experiments
- Automated annotation of genomic features from public data sources
- Integration with downstream interpretive systems such as Ingenuity IPA and Thomson-Reuters GeneGo
Utilizing a data repository model built on industry standard FASTA, SAM/BAM and GFF3/Tabix formats, the NGS Collection provides a simple yet powerful environment for storing, annotating, interrogating and comparing genome-wide datasets.
Pipeline Pilot 8.0: Collection Update 3 Available
Pipeline Pilot’s Component Collections are the “scientific building blocks” of the scientific informatics platform and are grouped by category of science or function. Collection Update 3 (CU3) extends the Cheminformatics Collection to integrate with the Accelrys Direct 7.0 data cartridge (previously Symyx Direct ). The new components cover all aspects of creating, maintaining and searching structure and reaction databases in Accelrys Direct and include a comprehensive set of examples. Customers previously entitled to the Cheminformatics Collection or the Accord cartridge can obtain this new release by logging into the Accelrys customer support center and clicking on the download center link.
Administrators were notified upon release. For further information on CU3, please contact your Account Manager.
