New cGMP Quality Data Implementation Strategy: a Lab Execution System (LES) to Automate and Harmonize global QC Operations

John Helfrich, Senior Director, Strategic Planning

Historically, the life science industry (pharmaceutical, generic and biotech companies) adopted a LIMS strategy for capturing and organizing operational quality control data. A typical LIMS project provides a place to manage samples and specifications and create reporting/trending documentation. Today 70%+ of the operational costs of quality reside in the human resources executing SOPs, test methods as well as the review personnel to insure the integrity of the data and workflows. These resources maintain a hybrid paper-based processes with transcription/data entry into the LIMS with little automation involved. The LIMS is primarily a “management/supervisory” tool, but does not improve productivity at the workflow/task levels by the large numbers of analysts and operators.

Drug manufacturer are now tasked with significant cost cutting initiatives while improving compliance risks. These issues generally are at odds with each other in a paper-based or a hybrid paper/automation-based system. This briefing outlines a LES (lab automation system) designed specifically for cGMP quality operations that incorporates the LIMS management functions and adds an electronic workflow execution system with full lab instrument integrations. The system is used by dozens of top tier pharma, generic and biotech companies yielding significant (25%+) productivity and cost improvements, 50-75% review/approval cycle time reductions and reduced operational deviations (ie. compliance risk reduction). Several case studies outlining pharma and biotech global implementations of this LES architecture will be presented.

The Convergence of SAP, LIMS, MES and ELN’s in cGMP Quality Labs and Production Batch Record Environments

John Helfrich, Senior Director, Strategic Planning

Convergence – con-ver-gence : the act of converging and esp. moving toward union or uniformity; independent development of similar characters often associated with similarity of habits or environment.

Over the past twenty years, laboratory and plant data in cGMP operations has been predominantly capture through a paper-based process or hybrid process of paper and automation. IT groups have been challenged by a significant array of disparate software applications including ERP (SAP), LIMS, MES and more recently Electronic Notebooks (ELN’s). These “systems” required significant custom coded integration efforts to attempt some level of automation for ease of workflow. The result often involved a multi-year project, costing millions (and often tens of millions) of dollars with significant compliance related validation costs that further increase the total cost of ownership for the resultant “cGMP IT System”.

In preparation for the next decade, innovative life science companies are actively planning to “harmonize” their global cGMP IT systems. Their goals are to gain significant productivity improvements, dramatic cost reductions and improved infrastructure dynamics through a clear and compelling IT platform convergence strategy. In many companies this results in a tiered structure with SAP, a thin-LIMS and a cGMP Electronic Notebook System for lab and batch records. For some, it is an elimination of the LIMS layer all together by utilizing the QM module of SAP and the administration modules in the cGMP ELN. Either way, reported results include 25%+ cost/productivity improvements, 50%+ cycle time reductions, the elimination of paper in the process and assured compliance documentation. This web briefing will outline the key issues involved in this convergence strategy and offers example case studies outlining the long term total cost of ownership advantages of a tiered IT solution that functionally merges SAP, LIMS, EBR (electronic batch records) and ELN’s (electronic lab notebooks).

Lab Manager Presents - Next-Generation Electronic Lab Notebooks

Francois Beillouin, Agilent Technologies
Dominic John, Accelrys
Thomas Schmidt, Waters Corporation

ELNs are literal replacements for the bound paper notebooks traditionally used by lab personnel. They hold specific experimental data that reflect minute-by-minute, documentable lab activities. ELNs can prove to be very useful to help design experiments, document and archive all data, share data with colleagues anywhere in the world, meet regulatory audits, and provide a legal basis for generating intellectual property.

Our panel of experts will talk about the next-generation of ELNs and their dynamic features, serving various applications in the organization. They will also outline a successful implementation strategy, addressing issues such as the relationship between the ELN and other laboratory information systems, the functionalities needed to support different scientific disciplines and the organizational needs related to knowledge management and financial investment.

As an Attendee You Will Learn:

  • What an ELN can do
  • How it can benefit your lab
  • How to choose the right supplier
  • How to effectively implement it

C&EN Webinars Presents - Driving End-to-End Drug Development through an Electronic Lab Notebook

Joel Hanson - Global Head, Research IT, Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development

Cutting and pasting print-outs into a paper lab notebook can consume up to 25% of a scientist's workday, reducing the time left for science. Eliminating scissors and glue is reason enough for equipping scientists with an electronic lab notebook (ELN), however, the true value of the ELN extends far beyond replacing paper.

Committing to an ELN provides a more collaborative, productive, and insightful electronic lab environment. In the electronic lab, scientists can quickly process and analyze data from multiple sources in multiple contexts. More importantly, they can shift their focus from formatting information to interpreting results and making decisions faster. In this webinar, Johnson & Johnson describe how they implemented an ELN in their large and small molecule API, and their drug product and analytical groups, and how these teams are working together more efficiently and productively as a result.

This webinar will provide information on:

  • Approaches to ELN implementation, including integrating data from multiple sources
  • Using data warehousing in the ELN to mine and extract more scientific knowledge
  • Accelerating product development using standard recipes within the ELN

What you'll learn in this webinar:

  • Value of the ELN in sharing information across formulation, process and analytical scientists
  • Role of the ELN as part of a broader strategy around data warehousing
  • Lessons learned regarding ELN deployment across a functionally and geographically diverse set of scientists
